Being Counted Worthy of the Gospel

This is the second post in the Passion 2011 series. These are my notes from Francis Chan’s sermon on April 2, 2011 at Passion Fort Worth entitled “Being Counted Worthy of the Gospel.”
Only God can open your eyes to see that to live is Christ and to die is gain. No matter what Chan says or Louie says or Piper says, they have no power to make you live for Christ. That can be discouraging at time for those in ministry until they realize that God’s purpose and desire is so much stronger and better than any human’s. Speakers, pastors, friends, etc, can set you up to see the truth of God’s crazy love, but only God can open your eyes to see it and make it real.
27Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of youthat you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, 28and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. -Philippians 1:27-28
God calls us to live a life worthy of the Gospel. The word for worthy relates to the idea of scales. Our lives, if placed on scales with the Gospel, it should be found to balance it out. That’s what it means to be worthy.
God has always been and will always been. It’s funny how we, as humans, just show up for a second and think we make all the rules. We think life is about us, that everything depends on us, and so on. We exist for a blink of an eye in eternity. Because God is eternal, He makes the rules.
11But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, 14to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen. -1 Timothy 6:11-16
As Christians, we affirm as Gospel that says that God stood by while His perfect Son was crucified for our sin. That’s love. If you truly believe that, you will live a life worthy of that Gospel. We must recognize that God is the only one with any control of our lives. When we truly believe the message of the Bible, crazy things make sense (like martyrs, material sacrifice, etc). God wants us striving side-by-side for Him without fear.
